آر. اف. کوانگ در رمان Babel در پی مرتبط ساختن اسطوره‌ها و نشانه‌های کهن به دنیای مدرن است. کوانگ در این رمان به موضوع قدرت‌طلبی کشورهای جنگ‌طلب در دنیای مدرن می‌پردازد که با استفاده از گسترش و برتری‌جویی زبان این کار را انجام می‌دهند. داستان «بابل» درباره‌ی رابین سویفت است که پدر و مادری چینی دارد اما در انگلستان زندگی می‌کند. او دانشجوی مترجمی زبان در دانشگاه آکسفورد انگلیس است. رابین سویفت شخصیت اصلی این داستان در آکسفورد با چند دانشجو از کشورهای دیگر آشنا می‌شود و به یادگیری زبان‌های مختلف می‌پردازند. او در جریان این آشنایی به عضویت موسسه‌ی سلطنتی ترجمه با نام «بابل» درمی آید. بابل در ظاهر مرکز جهانی ترجمه است اما فعالیت دیگری که در این مرکز انجام می‌شود نقره‌کاری است. در این رمان نقره‌کاری هنری است که به تبدیل شدن انگلستان به کشوری قدرتمند کمک کرده‌است. سویفت در ادامه ناخواسته به عضویت انجمنی مخفی به نام هرمس در می‌آید که آن هم در جهت گسترش اهداف سلطه‌گرایانه انگلستان فعالیت می‌کند.
