کتاب We اثر یوگنی زامیاتین، داستان جامعهای در آینده دور است که در آن «دولت واحد» تقریباً تمام جنبههای زندگی انسانها را تحت کنترل دارد. شهر از ساختمانهای شیشهای تشکیل شده و شهروندان، که بهجای نام با حروف و اعداد شناخته میشوند، طبق برنامهای دقیق زندگی میکنند. نظم، محاسبه و هماهنگی جمعی جای آزادی فردی، حریم خصوصی و احساسات شخصی را گرفته است و حتی روابط میان انسانها نیز تحت نظارت و قوانین حکومت قرار دارد.
راوی داستان، مهندس ریاضیدانی به نام D-503 است که در حال ساخت سفینهای به نام Integral است؛ سفینهای که قرار است پیام و قدرت دولت واحد را به جهانهای دیگر برساند. اما آشنایی او با زنی مرموز به نام I-330، نظم ذهنی و زندگیای را که همیشه بدیهی میدانسته، به تدریج متزلزل میکند. D-503 برای نخستین بار با عشق، میل، تخیل و فردیتی روبهرو میشود که جامعهاش آنها را تهدیدی علیه نظم میداند.
با تبدیل شدن دفترچه خاطرات D-503 به روایتی از بیداری و سرپیچی، مرز میان وفاداری به حکومت و میل به آزادی از میان میرود. این رمان با تصویر جامعهای مبتنی بر نظارت و یکسانسازی، پرسشهایی درباره هویت، آزادی، عشق و بهای از دست دادن فردیت مطرح میکند.

Russian author and political dissident Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884–1937) was a former Bolshevik who became a critic of Soviet conformity, and was censured for his uncompromising literary defiance. When We was blacklisted by the Soviet censorship board, Zamaytin arranged for it to be smuggled to the West for publication, an act that ultimately led to his exile from his homeland. He died in poverty in Paris.
