کتاب The Last House on Needless Street داستان مردی به نام تِد بنرمن را روایت میکند که در خانهای متروکه و تختهکوبشده، در انتهای خیابانی بنبست در نزدیکی جنگلهای واشنگتن، همراه دخترش لورن و گربهاش اولیویا زندگی میکند. زندگی او از بیرون عجیب و منزوی به نظر میرسد؛ حافظهاش گاهی او را تنها میگذارد، زمان را بهدرستی به خاطر نمیآورد و بخشهایی از گذشتهاش در ذهنش گم شدهاند.
یازده سال پیش، کودکی در نزدیکی یک دریاچه ناپدید شد؛ حادثهای که زندگی خانوادهای را برای همیشه تغییر داد. دی، خواهر بزرگتر آن کودک، هنوز نتوانسته از این اتفاق بگذرد و سالهاست به دنبال حقیقت و خواهر گمشدهاش میگردد. وقتی دی به خانهای نزدیک خانه تِد نقل مکان میکند، گذشته دوباره زنده میشود و رازهایی که در میان درختان و درون خانه پنهان ماندهاند، کمکم آشکار میشوند.
با پیش رفتن داستان، روایت میان دیدگاههای متفاوت جابهجا میشود و آنچه درباره شخصیتها، گذشته و اتفاقات میدانیم دائماً تغییر میکند. هرچه به راز خانه نزدیکتر میشویم، مرز میان حقیقت، خاطره و برداشت ذهنی از واقعیت نیز مبهمتر میشود؛ تا جایی که بسیاری از چیزهایی که در ابتدا قطعی به نظر میرسند، ممکن است معنای کاملاً متفاوتی داشته باشند.
