داستان کتاب در دوره افسردگی بزرگ آمریکا رخ می دهد. نویسنده کتاب بار دیگر با نثر گیرا و تاثیرگذار خود سعی در به تصویر کشیدن درونیات زنان و ارتباط آن ها با جامعه بیرونی دارد. نویسنده برای نوشتن کتاب “ستاره بخش” بیش از یک سال را صرف تحقیقات و بررسی تاریخ و 9 ماه صرف نوشتن آن کرد. داستان ذکر شده بر اساس واقعیت تاریخی و پنج زن است که وظیفه توزیع کتاب و ترویج سواد در میان مردم در سال 1930 را بر عهده دارند. پس از انتشار کتاب در ماه های آغازین، کارگردان فیلم “من پیش از تو” تصمیم به ساخت اقتباسی از این اثر گرفت.
