To his customers and neighbors on 125th Street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent and honest living. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and his shadier dealings are well hidden. Furniture, not quite paid for, is sold on the side. Then Freddie, Carney’s reckless cousin, falls in with a crew planning to rob the Hotel Theresa, the “Waldorf of Harlem,” in the summer of 1961. Carney wants no part of it, but he can’t say no to Freddie, and nothing draws a decent man into the game like family.
