The Wife Upstairs reminded me a lot of Colleen Hoover’s Verity—there’s a familiar, dark allure in its plot twists and psychological suspense. While the overall storyline follows a similar vein to Verity, McFadden made some notable changes. In her version, the narrative steers clear of the tragic element of children dying, and the ending takes a different turn. This fresh take provided an appealing change, even if it meant the story wasn’t exactly what I expected from a thriller.
I enjoyed this installment as much as any other McFadden book. After immersing myself in classical literature, diving into this modern thriller was a welcome, lighter break. The tension and atmospheric storytelling kept me engaged throughout, even if there were moments when the pacing felt a bit familiar.
